One of the gentlemen kicks a rock into the hole and listens to hear the rock hit bottom but to his surprise he hears nothing. The other gentleman decides they need to get a bigger rock, so he finds a much larger rock and throws that into the hole, but again they hear nothing. They decide they need something bigger yet and spy a railroad tie nearby.
With a bit of grunting and groaning the two men manage to man-handle the railroad tie into the hole. They are standing by the hole waiting to hear it hit bottom when suddenly a goat goes running by and jumps into the hole. The gentlemen are mystified but its getting dark so they decide it is time to head home.
As they are crossing the field they run into a farmer and he asks them if either of them have seen his goat.
One of the gentlemen replies that “Yes, they have seen a goat. It went running by them and jumped into a big hole in the field.”
The farmer replies “Oh, that can’t be my goat. My goat was tied to a railroad tie.”
