I was looking back to see if I could return to the original topic, but got stuck on Rocky Horror Jesus show, and now have "Let's do the time warp agaaaain!" in my head >___< Guess what I'll be singing at the top of my lungs now that I'm alone?
My cat is looking at me with the same look he had when we first brought home my niece and he heard that god-awful wailing. It's okay. He's insane already.

Why do the American and European versions of the Harry Potter cover arts differ? Also why do some countries have the book title "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" instead of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"?

There are several different covers for the books because they aim to be attractive to the particular audience in a country. Different countries prefer different styles. I know that there are also different covers for the copies aimed at children (more pictoral and brightly coloured) and adults (plainer and darker in colour to be inconspicuous). Or, it may be that there are different publishers for different countries and they have to provide their own artwork for the covers.
As for the difference between 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' and 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone', I am sure I read somewhere that JKR changed it because the publishers felt that the US readers would like the second version of the title better.

Actually, Max you have it closer than you know.
The original title of the book is "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". However, it was believed that the reference was too "vague and confusing" for Americans... Apparently (and I wish I was kidding you here), they asked a selection of american readers if they understood the title and the most common reaction to it was "What is a philosopher?".

Thus they changed it to "Sorcerer's Stone" since everyone in their selection understood what a wizard or sorcerer was.
Other than that, the books were exactly the same... Except wherever the term "philosopher" was they changed it to "sorcerer" as per the title.
