Ah you did not offend me :) I was bitter today because of my own problems with the Church and their blasphemous ramblings and having their say of what I will or won't do in my own home and bed.

That is interesting information there. I wish I had more of a mind for science in the last few weeks, but my mind has been occupied.

Very interesting though, and I will enjoy bringing this for discussion with my partner.

Wow, that was a litle unexpected... Quite funny though.

LOL: Sabre toothed squirell, you guys rock.

In other news, I remeber hearing about potassium dayting, which was more accurate than carbon-14, especially with older items. Carbon 14 can only go back so far because it has a shorter half life than potassium.

Willow, as far as I know, you could do dating with a lot of chemicals. The problem is that some were not around until later. Carbon was one of the first elements to be created because of it's neutrons protons and electrons. Hydrogen and Helium were the first ever, but carbon was only a little later. So, the longer the element has been around, the more you can actually date.

This is what I remember from my nuclear chemistry class. I'll get the book out asap and fill you in on more. I'd like to know some of this stuff, and we didn't spend a whole lot of time on this.

Oh well OT again.

Yes there many different methods using radioactive isotopes in dating.

C14 is very different from the U238/Pb206, the latter uses the parent/daughter ratio to determine age. That is, U238 having a halflife of 4.468 billion years will decay into Pb206. Uranium will incorporate it self into certain minerals and Pb206 will not, Zirconium is one of those minerals. By measuring the ratio between those two isotopes one will be able to calculate the age of the mineral. Look at Zirconium using a microscope you will actually see that fission tracks have partly destroyed the crystal structure. I may not remember it completely correct but it should be along the lines.

Not all elements and their respective isotopes are radioactive would be a real mess if they where;)
