Stephen King's best advice in On Writing: Keep what you need, trash what you don't. Luckily I listened to that, or my own story would have been a third longer and with five unecessary characters that, in retrospect, I was happy to amputate. Hey, there's always my little collection of "untold stories."

I still feel absurd reading the abridged versions. Granted, with Les Miserables, which unfortunately I have not read, and others in the eras of "volume = $" it is sometimes necessary to make it through the thing. Not to mention unabridged paperback copies sometimes are very expensive, if available at all.

Tolkien still does it for me ^_^ I think if a writer can succeed in making you thoroughly fall in love with the characters and atmosphere, he can get away with murder.

So true but I read all four books within a week. For the same reasons as Lotus:

Lotus: The Twilight series seems to be fluff that someone reads just to pass time. That is exactly what I am using it for.

If only for a cutey hero to follow. Sometimes it's a relief to be able to have a book you can read in a couple of days, when you pore over older tomes.

I am grrrry about abridging classics. The in between bits will tell you just as much about the era of time the book was written in as the main bits. Saying that, I skimmed over all the Napoleonic war bits in Vanity Fair, and the lists of weapons/boats/etc in the Illiad, and...

To Max: I've never read Twilight...and I never said that. KITSUNE says that earlier on. Just clarifying.

And Mahala: There is no such thing as an abridged "The Princess Bride". Or rather, the "work" that they're "abridging" doesn't exist. It was a gag...to see how many people would fall for it. I did a huge search online for the "original" story when I first read it...so I got had . The whole book is a running joke...poking fun at the classics and at epic fantasy. I believe they term it "Satire". LOL.

Read two chapters of twilight and put it down...I HATE the character of Bella and the way it was written Check out Bitch magazine for a great feminist critique of the series.

I love detail, but I agree, you have to be into it. I love the wheel of time and many other writers because of their detail.

Salvatore is on my list, I just need to finish satanic verses first (and the book of Negroes)

That article in Bitch was really funny. So true! But I still enjoyed the book. And really most vampire stories involve the tradition of the weak female trying to fight against the sexyish vampire which is always a metaphor for sexuality. In the article I liked the new phrase 'Abstinence Porn'. I thought the abstinence was quite sweet in the book, and as a narrative technique it kept you hooked until book 3. But realistically, any hint of sex in a teenage book is always thoroughly scrutinised in case it 'defiles' the intended audience (*rolls eyes* ), writers have to be careful (unless you're Melvin Burgess writing 'Doing It' then apparantly the field is open).

Is the Satanic Verses any good? It's one of those novels that is 'on the list' to read. Made especially more interesting because of the fuss it made.

Satanic verses is good but in a literary way, it sin't a book you can put down and pick up and read in small chunks, and it does demand a vase familiarity with Islam if you are going to understand all of the connotations. I think if you are intested in reading Salman Rushdie, midnights children is the best place to start, its still a slog, but very worth it,and its worth it to scan a reader guide before you start either book.

I also love the term abstinence porn. I should also mention, I have never been big into vampire stories (even as a kid) because of some nightmares I have had. However, anything that gets kids/teens reading I support, some of the stuff I read was crap and I turned out OK. Or at least I think I did....you never know what other people think

I like Twilight it's cool and romantic.Jasper Hale is my favorite charecter I love him.The movie is cool I like the setting.

Along with sunlight, running water, wooden stakes, and bad italian food, it seems that a new fear has struck the Vampire community. Apparently the same effects will happen if you hand one a book of the Twilight series! Upon reading the phrase "sparked in the sunlight," (referring to the protagonist Vampire's skin) the reader will begin to scream, sheilding their eyes, and catch aflame.
There's 5 traditional ways to kill a Vampire, and approximately a million ways Hollywood could play it out to be. I guess Stephanie Meyer's "Twlilight" Series seems to have accomplished what no one could have dreamed: Killing Vampires.

Speaking of Twilight... If anyone happens to be dragged to see the New Moon movie coming out, I'm one of the extras. You'll see a bit of red haze walk by (my hair) in some scenes, or sitting. It was great fun. They all thought I was 15. o_O Hurrah for Artistry I guess.

Side note, finally finished the satanic verses...was a total slog and I figured out why Muslims were offended by it, even if I disagree with them. My new Wheel of time comes out in FIVE days!!! Whose excited.

After that, I will pick up Stirling or Salvatore as long promised!

Nah you don't have to watch it! I'm just background colour. However, if a tween happens to drag you to it, just watch for the puff of red OH! And my fat old grey Taurus! I think it gets more screentime than I do!
