New with Questions.

Postby unicornvr » Thu Jul 10, 2008 3:52 pm

Hello. I have been picking my way through a spiritual path for quite some time, and will probably still be picking through it a hundred years down the road. I'm so curious. As much as I love reading (any good suggestions?), I'd prefer to also learn by watching and doing - but how do you find other pagans? And pagans are so diverse, so how do you know if you will "fit" with a particular type? Always the same, the more your learn, the more questions you have. Any advice on books, people or learning will be appreciated. TIA!

Welcome, I think we all search forever... Answers that don't lead to more questions are never the important ones.

If you check out our Books section, you'll find that we've given our opinions of quite a few craft books, but if you tell us what sort of path you're following, we can probally suggest at least a few that are closer to path specific.

What will work for a chaotic neo-pagan like me, won't work for someone following an Alexandrian Wiccan path after all.

I can't wait to see more posts from you though! :-D

Unicornvr: but how do you find other pagans?

THAT is a tough question. In a few years of searching, I have settled that the PL was my only link to other Pagans, until recently. I am in love with a Christian who wants to share in my practices and often does and believes much the same as I, my best friend is a Christian with the same worldview as I, and I have FINALLY found a Wiccan friend!! It is only in the last few months we have been seeing much of eachother; I take belly dance lessons from her, she takes psychic development classes with me.

So, finding other Pagans seems to have proven difficult in my area, but you may have better luck.

Kitsune has offered some great advice: Check around the Library on options for books, but for someone beginning, I wholeheartedly recommend Animal-Speak by Ted Andrews. He has many "beginner" books that work just as well for those who are "advanced." I deeply respect the man, although he is in clear need of an editor. He has a deep wisdom that comes out cunningly - I would call him a Shaman.

Check around the Library for topics that may prove similar to your questions. I know at one time I was posting guided meditations and excercises and such, and may do so again soon, and those may be of interest.

Welcome to the Library in any case! In health and happiness

I will check out the books section - good thing I have a great public library for books and such too! I walk a confused path grabbing snipits here and there. I started just by following (and celebrating!) the wheel of the year and trying to be more aware of what's going on in nature and otherwise. I'd like to learn more about rituals, something to keep me connected to the spiritual realm, on a regular basis. It's too easy for me to get caught up in life's busyness, and sometimes I need to ground myself. Thanks for the help!

I don't know where in Ohio you live, but there is another member here who lives in Ohio and has mentioned pagan pride days and many pagan festivals. She might know of places you can find like minded people. Let's see if she notices this thread and chimes in!!

Yahoo groups and meetups are a great way to go, also look for pagan yardsales and pride days.

Also if you live near any sort of university or college they will likely have a pagan group on campus.

Finally, google. Google pagan groups and yor town name and you will be amazed what you find.

We *would* teach you the secret pagan handshake but we don't really know you yet :P (jk).

Least not until they've drank of the sacred cow blood and we've done some ritualized beatings first. :-"

Have you tried meetup.com?

A quick search...

Circle of the Dark Moon - Akron Extension

Medina County Pagans

I'm sure you'll find a lot more.

CHL-that is funny because we are both vegetarians, I guess for us it is the sacred carrot juice.

Meet-up.com, that was the other site I was trying to think of.

Decided to get off my lazy butt and do some googling. I have found a couple groups in the area, so we'll see how that goes :-) Hopefully I'm off to a good start!

Speaking of carrot juice, Willow, when you're next in the area, I'm taking you to Naam, the best veggetarian/vegan restaurant in the Lower Mainland. VEGAN BLUEBERRY MILKSHAKES, WILLOW!!! OH MY GAHDS! And fresh carrot juice! Not the pasteurized stuff, but made right there!

Sacred Carrot Juice or Sacred Green Smoothie... Hmm... Tough one.

 The funny thing is, this is stuff you eat anyway; it doesn't have to be labelled Vegan! Carrot juice, or broccoli, for example, vs Naam-burgers. Bring the V-Word in (like so many other V-Words) and people get upset.

 Vegan Porn... love it, Kitsune! I have an entirely new term to play with - Fahna will love it!

](*,) Willow will not make a very dirty joke here about vegan porn [-X :-"

As I wipe the drool from my keyboard after thinking about vegan milkshakes.... And we can incorporate both the smoothie and the carrot into our ritual, who says your anathame can't be a carrot? Really they're all just phallic symbols (Oh that could start a fight) :-D

Unicornvr, good luck, just remember to always meet in public places and don't give away too much too soon (leave yourself an out) because unfortunately many of us on this board have experience with crazy people we have met online. If they start getting offended because you won't meet them alone or give out private info, drop 'em like a hot potato.
