Mine for actual use.

I am interested in when that switch would have been made because I know that swords in the Canadian navy are completely ceremonial now.

The last time the British / Commonwealth/U.S forces carried swords in action was 1930 ish. But, as I said MOST of the "Western" navys still issue them to boarding partys. They are not like the ceremonial swords you see. But more or less exactly like the one in my picture. OR with the "Full" grip. which looks like a "pirate" sword.

There was a Royal Navy officer in the late 80's who was awarded the Military Medal for defending his boarding party with his cutlass, whilst on anti pirate patrol in the far East, attached to the Australian Navy.

I was referring more to a resort town kind of hiliday. I islike those place, so fake.

How is it to fight with a cerated (notched) edge on your sword? Do you find it catches much with the opponents weapon? Is that the purpose of it?

Well, it's a multi purpose tool.

The saw back is to cut the hooves off dead horses. Military horses are stamped on one of the hooves. This hoof must go back to the regiment, so they can claim the price of the horse from the war department.

BUT, it can also be used for wood cutting, and as a surgeons instrument.

The same reasons regimental farriers, and pioneers carry an axe. Except the Prussian pioneers, during the Napoleonic period, did not have the axe. Other armys had both. (I am going to miss my axe. Even though it can be a pain in the butt to carry on the train.)

As to fighting with it. It is a slashing weapon, like a sabre, or cutlass, so the back of the blade is not really a problem. If the back of the blade hits the oponent, then you have done something wrong...Like lost an arm.:-D

Or, the runes tell me, you will do in the VERY near future.

Nice pics and I shall now spray you both with singing bowl water to wash away the stench. Or at least stand upwind.

we could just throw them both in the water then attack them with super soakers filled with soapy water (that is what we did to the kids at my camp, it made sure they went home at least semi-cleaned)

However, being exam period I can't really talk, my apartment, although neat, is in dire need of a scrub down.

I got ambushed at Renaisance Fair recently...

And, of course, the rest of the photos from the Fair.
