New Kid in Town

Post by Valhalla » Thu May 24, 2007 8:50 pm

Merry Meet all

I am new to Paganism and to this site. I am very much looking forward to starting on my path and thought introducing myself would be a great start. I have much to learn and the fire to learn it. Now all I need is a little help from my new brothers and sisters.

Blessed Be

Greetings.

Ask away. Answering questions keeps us on our toes. It's a two way street.

You may think you are learning from us. But we learn from it too.

Pull up the comfey chair, and lets talk. 8-)

As to books to read. It depends very much on which path you choose.

From your chosen scren name I would assume Norse?

Edred Thorrsson is a good, probably the best starting point. A search of Amazon, or similar will tell you what is available. I have lost track of English printed books.

Also the thread on these boards "Book club" has a wealth of information. All reccomended by the people here. So you can take their advice as sound. 8-)

There are plenty of books on the market, but sadly, only a few are worth the money, and even fewer are "real gems".

My personal list for Norse is;

Jones. G
A history of the Vikings
Oxford university press 1984.

Maggnusson/Pàlsson
The vinland sagas, The Norse discovery of America.
Penguin classics 1965.

Pàlsson/Edwards
Njalls saga
Penguin classics 1960.

Orkneyinga saga
Penguin classics 1981.

Vikings in Russia
Edinburgh university press 1989.

Sawyer B and P
Mediaeval Scandinavia
Minnesota university press 1993

Ticheneil E:B
Masks of Oðin
Pasedena university press 1988.

Jesch. J
Women in the Wiking age
Boydell press 1994.

Taccitus
Germania
Various copies, publishers, dates etc.

Gramaticus
History of the Danes
Various.

Logan. F.D
The Vikings in history
Routledge 1992

Mackenzie. D.A
Teutonic myth and legend
Gresham publishing, London. No date given.

Gürber, H.A
The Norsemen
Senate 1994.

Sturlasson. S
Eddas
Every man publishing.

Crossley-Holland. K
The Norse myths.
Penguin 1980

Thorsson. E
Northern magic. Llewellyn world wide Ltd 1993
Futhark; A hand book of Rune magic. Aquarian 1985
Runelore. Weiser 1988.

Mc Neill. F.M
The silver bough
Canongate classics #24. 1989

Frazer. J .sir
Golden bough
Wordsworth reference 1993.

Eliade. M
Shamanism; Archaic techniques of ecstacy.
Arkarna 1989.

As to Keltic, Wicca, etc, I am sure you will get a wealth of replys from the people here that are into those paths.

Good luck, good reading. ;)

Welcome in,
I can't help you with Norse at all but there is lots on this site to read.

Looking forward to some posts. We love opinions here and everyone is pretty good about handling differing ones.

Hello and welcome!

Ragnar, you can always be counted on for a list of good books. I would love to see your library.

Valhalla, I have a good list of books, but I am not sure which to recommend, as I am not sure quite what you are into. Welcome, anyway! Enjoy yourself!

try to start with reading general books (general paganism/wicca with some breif descriptions of paths). Your path will come to you in time, it's important to now get a "solid" hold on what your personal beleifs are and expose yourself to new ideas while developing these... I just learned this myself recently. :-D ;)

Welcome...

Books are Good! Tell us more about your paths, and look in our Books section... Generally, whether we're raving or ranting our opinions on books is there...

At least until we know more about you, right? ;)

Thanks to all of you for your warm welcome. I guess my profile name is a bit misleading. Valhalla is a nickname that I got from an uncle. I'm not even sure why. Anyway, I guess what would interest me most right now is general information on all things pagan. A history would be good as well. I am also pretty interested in Wicca. Any ideas in those areas would be great.

Here's a specific type question. While I know what Levels are ... what are they specifically related to this website?

Just an indication of how many posts you've made. You go up one every thirty posts. They don't actually mean much :-D

Merry Meet and Welcome :-D

Not only are CHL and Ragnar great sources on information in regards to books, you may also want to have a browse through the Book Club section of the forums. Last time I checked, we had a huge and varying array of books and authors mentioned in amongst all the sticky posts.

I hope you enjoy your stay with us :-D

Blessings.
