Do the Hoodoo-Voodoo!

Post by Hytegia » Mon Dec 14, 2009 7:26 am

Hey guys!
:]
If you haven't heard, I moved into an apartment and started concentrating on my Magickal works more now (being free from overlooming eyes helps. Alot. xD) and I've began working on a more Southern and Alabama aspect of Magick - Hoodoo and Voodoo.
They are both inherently almost the same, except Hoodoo is in Alabama and Voodoo is in Louisiana (Mississippi gets the short end of the stick in this one). It's practically open-ended Shamanism mixed with Superstition.

My questions are simple:
1) The snake god - mandatory? I'm sure I could shake the same works off a raven or one of my Totems better. But I get the concept of the Snake in early beliefs (the never-ending Snake, biting it's own eternally growing tail).
2) Do any of you have major Gris-Gris ingredients? I can't seem to find a list ANYWHERE - online or off. :[
"Water, water, everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink."

It would probably be more "freeform", less traditional, but I'd say you can use any Totem that truly speaks to you instead of just the snake.

I think another reason the Snake was used, aside from the reverence it gets in older cultures that the religion practices have roots in, is the fear that it generates in those who are immersed in Catholic thought. Remember, to them, the Snake was the Devil who brought pain and suffering into the world by luring Eve to Sin. Granted, some practice of Voodoo, to my limited knowledge, does incorporate Catholicism in some of the callings and rituals...there was still the balancing dark and light thing.
You say "Witch" like it's a bad thing!

Um...ok, from what I understand, and I could be wrong, but, Voodoo came straight from Africa with the slaves and is more about religion and connection with the divine than magick, and being that the slaves had to pick a Christian belief system, they identified more with Catholicism as it's the closest to polytheistic that Christianity comes. Hoodoo focuses more on the magickal aspect and is a mix of Voodoo, Native American(both from the USA and Mexico), Spanish, French, European, and whatever they came across in the islands. Also, I've heard that Voodoo is more family oriented, as in solo practitioners are missing out on half the fun where as Hoodoo you can go it alone and not miss too much. But again, not an expert.

What are you looking for? I don't have a lot, but it's more then I'd be willing to shake a stick at on a dark night. Pm me if you want, I'll share :-D , but I recommend hitting up a few sites first. And, no, there's no magick at work here, I just Googled a few key words and presto! Magick....Info, info on magick.

Also, if Hoodoo is more your thing, I've found that a little sense goes a long way. Like using local ingredients and common household items, practitioners from a hundred years ago used what they had, they couldn't order ginseng root off Ebay. You'll notice they used a lot of flannel instead of silk and brown butcher paper instead of white stationary. Ink was for the rich, they used berries and tree sap. All hail the mighty muse, Ingenuity!!!
Maybe now you're starting to understand that while I may have been born predispositioned to be pretty batty, my parents saw to it that it was a certainty and completely unavoidable. -Me

If I can be of any service to you, Hytegia, please feel free to let me know. I live just outside New Orleans and know of at least one shop I can get to on any given weekend and either ask for info or pick up something for you. :)
I have lost my way.
