What Am I?

Post by Hytegia » Sat Jun 20, 2009 7:46 am

Call me ignorant-
But what am I?!
I was always content with Wizard, soothsayer, Plane Walker, Occultist, Magus, or whatever I pumped up in Spirit conversational titles. But I never had a real knowledge of what I was.
I talk and see Spirits. I see life in everything and speak to all manners of Spirits. In enchantment, I only Awaken the Spirit of the object, or make a Spirit bound to it (like once... It was a deal instead of Total Death. :/)

I dont want to sound cocky. I just want to know what I AM!

I prefer, as much and as cliché as this will sound, not to go by titles. (Although I do have nicknames.) Sometimes labeling or tagging ourselves will put us in a group and we feel more pressure to fully conform to the group. Like saying you're a 'white' witch, or a 'black' witch when you're in between. (I don't believe in either; There's no such thing as a white witch, but that's another topic.)

I long ago found and attached myself to my magick name, Lady Mahala. Oddly, it means 'healer' or 'tender woman' in either Hebrew, Hawaiian, or Sanskrit. To me, that's the only tag I'll need because in time, it'll sum me up to anyone I happen to meet who is also a pagan.

I'm Davisherm. And that's all the title anybody needs as far as I'm concerned. I'm not Wiccan. I'm not a Shaman. I'm no white witch by any means. I'm not a sorcerer or a magician or anything like that. At times, I've identified myself as a witch or wiccan just for the sake of simplicity, but it doesn't define me.

The general term 'eclectic pagan' probably suits me best, as I've begged and borrowed from a few different ways and means.

If you're looking for somebody to define the way you practice, just going by the sheer number of spirits that you work with or are just generally drawn to you, I'd say you seem to lean in the direction of being a Spiritualist. Just means that you're good with spirits.

Ah.
Someone asked me my "Flavor" once, but I said Occultist. That was what I was wondering.
By titles I was reffering to accomplishments or stuff. Like one Spirit would say: "I am *Name*, called Kamakaze, the Divine Wind and guardian of Japan. Wrath of-" and so on. Its just with Some that I've seen it done with that I respond back as boisterous titles. Most are "What do you want?"
I was putting it like: Druid, Shaman, Wiccan, Occultist, etc.
I just wanted to know my "Flavor", if you will.

Flavors are different than titles. Everyone, Wiccan or Pagan, has a different flavor, and many don't even have titles like mage, seer, or the like. For example, I could say I'm a shaman because I work with the elements to heal and to comfort, yet I also work with them to defend myself and others. I could say I'm a seer because I do see the future, but I can't control this talent and at the time, can't make use of it. (It was a close call once... I dreamed I had been shot fatally in a parking lot, and the next week a car trailed me through a parking lot on the way home! :pale: The only time my foresight was ever true, it HAD to be about my possible death!) So what does that make me, other than Lady Mahala? See where I'm going with this?

This is something many people struggle with at first. Many people feel lost without a name to call themselves.

It took me a number of years to find what I am called. That still changes. Have fun in the process, and take comfort in the fact that you are YOU, beyond smoke and veils. What is a name?

You will find it. It will take soul-searching. Listen to your allies.

I consider myself mainly an Elemental Witch, because I can feel the Elements most strongly, and remember reading something ages ago that defined "Witch" as "One who speaks to Spirits, be they ghosts, guardians, or guides". As I've been a Medium all my life (If you hunt around, you might be able to find the story of me "guiding" a child's spirit to the next path...when I was like 10? 7? Can't remember), Elemental Spirit Speaker seems to suit me...but it's a little awkward to say, so Witch works just as well.

Personality-wise, I'll sometimes refer to myself as a Gypsy, both b/c of traits drawn to the surface by discovering a past life and by playing one for many many years in a LARP...but it's a bit more of a fantasy-Romanticized version of the Gypsy that draws me, probably because they have allowed so little true information to be recorded of them, for good reason. Sometimes, when I'm strongly working my Divination, I'll call myself a mystic or gypsy mystic.

Yes, "flavor" descriptions help us focus, but you really have to figure out exactly who and what you are on your own...b/c no one can live your life for you.
You say "Witch" like it's a bad thing!

:-k
So, like all things, Flavor is just a choice?
Intresting!
I guess I'm sorta Shamanic in my approaches, and I have let my Guardian channel me once or twice before... It could make me a Shaman of sorts, then?
Sorry if I said titles. My PSP is annoying when I can barely type it in before I lose the signal, but all of those were what I considered "Flavors" in introductions... I AM flagrant with titles with those that need one to do anything seriously for me. Its like a game to play up feats. :P

I had a friend who identified himself as a Spirit Talker tell me once that, "Magic is like Gansta Rap. You have to talk yourself up and make a lot of threats to get them to take you seriously, sometimes. It's 90% BS but it gets them to listen." So, take that as you will.

We've kinda veered off-topic, but I like to buff up to Spirits with:
"-, who freed the Fae of Nowhere, -"
I'm not lieing... But Fae is singular, or plural. :)

Well I sometimes enjoy when I call the ones who start off with haughty titles and acievements all while (at most) both know we're all smoke and mirrors.
