yes, heavily kristjan areas can make it more difficult, especially when you're under age. It's often best to keep it to oneself anyway, at least at first. It gives you more time to grow in your beliefs and learn more of not just Wicca/Asatru/Paganism/Whatever, but also to learn more of what it means to *you*. Because what it means to youm the individual, is often different from what it says in books, even if the difference is very subtle. But having time to grow in the Path can be very helpful so that one's own peace, security and confidence about the Path they are on is real and not just a face shown when people question it. We didn't all grow in that specific way, I sometimes wish I had that option now days, but alas, I did not, nor do I think I would have taken it when a teen, but most I have advised to take the quieter overall path have come out better for it.

Either way, it's just words and that of course leaves you free to listen or not.

I totally agree. I'm careful about who I tell. And I don't shout it out to the world either. Most think I'm just a little weird and really into vampires. And I am, but there is more underneath it all, and I show it to a select few.

The 3 people that i work with on a daily basis (12 hour shifts 4 days a week, you kinda get close, like family) know that I am Wiccan and are very open and interested and let me talk all i want about it.

Well today a guy that i work with regularly but not as closely with found out. I am not sure how he took it cuz i didn't have as long to explain (it was close to going home time) But i think it went well. Maybe i will do a little clearing up on some details tomorrow. But i am very open about it, almost like shouting it to the world, i am a very proud witch and want to educate others and i will take all the harassment from close minded people to, its worth it to educate someone.

Just cant tell my own family. Oh well.

Most definitely, but for all intents and purposes, you are not underage and are out of the house. Not such a biggie as when still in school and coming to grips. Personally, I agree with the old keep it quite till it's formal, but that is really for one's own personal growth and such.

I was referring to the original post Wbdsr. In other words, like the older saying go, keep quite until you're initiated and sure that it's the path you will be staying on before spreading the word. I wasn't saying that for you it wasn't formal as of yet, I was making a generalized statement of older (and ofter still followed) practices.

Howdy,

My family knows, I've been into strange, (at least by their point of view), spiritual practices for so long that they just take it in stride. I come from a family with a lot of inherent psi ability, and that has helped in the understanding department. My sister has been able to talk to dead people throughout her life. When there is stuff like that going on, you either learn to accept, or you freak out. I attend the local UU church and did a talk on magickal practice there awhile ago, and will be doing a magickally oriented service,(how'd I talk myself into doing THAT one, I honestly have no idea what to do). I'm generally pretty open with people, although I'm not very proactive in telling people. Still I live in a small town, and when I'm in a coffee house with someone and I'm talking magick, everybody overhears it. Some of them do look alarmed, but well, they are not the kind of people that I like anyway, and I figure that this will cause them to keep their distance.

While I've been practicing for a number of years, I just announced to pretty much everyone that I'm Pagan. And I discoverd that I have two friends at work with the same beliefs! They were both able to take solstice off, while I sadly had to work.

The only people that don't know are my family. The entire family is very very close to the Christian God and I doubt there's been in any witches with my name since before we came over from Scottland.

So I suppose I've got one foot still in the closet

All in it's own time :-)

My inlaws think I am budhis or taoist (they really have no clue what the diff is) for goddess sake. Easier for them to cope with than Witch/Vitki/Pagan

Everyone else knows though and has since I was a teen.

Hmm. I apparently voted on this poll some time ago but didn't fill in any detail then. So I will rectify that oversight.

I got out of the closet a long time ago because there was not enough room in there for me and my romance novels.

I have been public to friends and family for years. I wear a pentacle ring everywhere I go, and often a pentacle necklace. I have been interviewed for newspaper articles and even appeared on a local TV station for a Halloween show. I am a legally ordained pagan minister in the state of New Jersey, and have performed a legal handfasting (for my own daughter), as well as a baby-naming ceremony, house blessings, a memorial service, and public and private sabbats and esbats. My goal is to one day be able to open a sanctuary center for educational and ritual purposes. Closet? What closet? (Oh, and my dad STILL thinks this is a "phase" I'm going through ...)

I'd have to say . . .

Post by Moonson » Mon Jun 07, 2004 10:19 am

Yup, I'm definitly out of the Broom-closet. Pagan way is really important to me and I have no reason to hide who I am. All my friends are cool about itso they're a big help in my life!

Sadly my parents are another story. All they know about the whole thing is what they've learned in Sunday School, y'know, all that Sattanic bull-crap! Some people just don't get it (I know that sounds like its out of a movie!)

They keep talking about how much they "know" about it and how bad it is for me. But, that's the way the cookie crumbles (so says a good friend of mine in Biology)

I am sorta out of the closet. My younger sister knows, and she practices with me. My younger brother knows, but doesnt say anything. My parents have no idea at all. I think one of my cousins may know, as I gave her my MSN group about witchcraft, so yeah. A couple of my sisters friends know as they're are interested in it. My older brother and sister have no Idea. And No-one else knows (I don't think).

Wow, I was surprised to see this one crop up again... I figured it would have been pruned long ago, heh heh.

Being out of the closet has it's ups and downs. It's nice to not have to hide that part of yourself. However, it can also open you up to a lot more harassment from the close minded, hypocritcal majority.

Neither am I out of the broomcloset.

I know that it would grieve my parents very much, they would not be able to accept(and it would pain me more than to keep it hidden)

Though my selection of books and jewelry SHOULD have been a hint.

A well, I am happy in my path and that is all that matters.
