I would guess it would depend on if they resonate with someone - typically rune stones are tapped into the Earth energy - just as Tarot are more sympathetic to Air.

I'm not sure as leather will tap into that energy as well if at all, or even another type.

All divination comes from within. It doesn't matter what material is used.

Oh true for the most part, we are the lens that focuses and sees - but the medium does seem to matter. Personally I can only focus through tarot, although I have tried other methods. Others seem to be able to use Rune stones, Crystals, Tea leaves, "Bones", or other method better or to the exclusion of others. I feel this has something to do with the energy type it draws from and connects to us to use.

I've always liked the idea of leather runes. If you can get a hold of deer hide or leather, or bison/buffalo from a farm, they could be fantastic for people with those animals as their totems. Animal items hold very intense energy for me (why I can't wear anything with bone in it, and my toolshelf has lots of feathers on it), so I feel that I could read runes better made from stiff leather than from stone or wood. To be honest, though, I've never actually attempted to do a reading with runes since I was a kid.

It COULD work, you'd just want to make sure the animal was treated humanly through it's life and death.
You probably knew that though.
Personally, I made my own out of stones and they're sitting right beside my computer right now. They're good friends of mine :-D

It depends on the runes & intended uses. If you mean a standard elder futhark rune set for decoration & divination, then oui, it'll work. Wood, stone & metal work better, for a wide variety of reasons, but for a general set, leather's just fine.

For better effect, dye the actual rune strokes in red/crimson, think movie blood color. That's traditional.

I was thinking for a standard elder futhark to place on my store for sale.

The idea was to burn the marks with my leather/wood burning tool...and depending on the shade of leather, tint them.

I had read in one of my friend's rune books that historically, Family Rune sets were made with something associated with the Head of the family's profession...like a carver or carpenter would use wood, a hunter bone or antler, so forth. I don't know how much of that is speculation or how much is fact, actually, but it sort of makes sense that they would use what they had the most of lying around.

Unfortunately, since I have commercially processed leathers on hand, I can't make any guarantees about the animal's treatment. I'm not sure how much that might taint readings, so I'm fairly reluctant to make any.

Maybe I'll hold this idea until I can get some hide from a hunter friend of mine, and just make pendants for now.

The family rune stuff is from the Netherlands in the early second eon c.e. You can disregard that for what you're talking about. That book was slightly off. Family runes done like that weren't elder sets, they were usually a bind rune which was their equivalent of a medieval crest or coat of arms.

You should be just fine with your plan dear. Just remember to make sure excessive handling won't wear away the rune or redding (tint) :-D

I suppose you could stuff them very slightly to make them more comfortable to grab from the bag. :-k

It would be interesting to see at least.

I do agree with Dark Waters, most people (myself included) seem to have a particular type of energy that they work better with. For me, It's tarot, though I strongly admit, that I can use anything... even if I have to leave the book open at my side while I read said divination, it works. The only things that I'm not as good with (simply because I don't have anything that works with them) is true scrying, crystal ball type of stuff.

Personally I feel the most connection to my tarot, but I've never understood why.... I don't think it's straight affinities, thought I will allow, I have never tried water scrying. Mainly because I want a silver ewer to do it with, and I haven't found a nice one yet.

Yup.

I have a few full sets of pendants...sold one at the craft show...now I'm getting ready to list them on Etsy. Need to count them out, put the hemp string on the ones that didn't get strung and then I'll be ready to list.

Sliding to another topic - any update on the wands from the branch struck by lightning? I generally wait until you say you have something new, before checking the store.
