I only know to assign a compass direction to an element by the geography of my location. Is there a spell/ritual that does this?!?

I just asked because I have noticed that a lot of books have a static placement of the elements that does not take into consideration the geography that the person lives in.

I wondered how many ppl look at what the topography of their area is and use that versus the static stuff in the books that might not match their location.

Desiderata20 - I am not sure what you are asking in response to my question...so I think I have to ask for clarification. I do not know any spell or ritual that tells you what element goes in what direction...but I know what I use to assign that...if that is the info you want?

I've read a few books that recommend swapping fire and earth around in the southern hemisphere. I do that, because I find it difficult to associate fire with the dark, cold direction. But I live on the east coast and still associate east with air and west with water. I think for me, it has more to do with the rising and setting of the sun than with the ocean. I realise that that's kinda odd... but what can I say?

It's not something I'm too fixed about. I know what direction I associate with which element, but it's not as important to my way of thinking as it is to some people. I might decide to switch things about in the future.

I associate particular animals with directions - Red-Tailed Hawk for South, Bear for West, Raven for North, and Eagle for East. I think of fire when I think of Red-Tailed Hawk, which is also where the sun is when it is warmest. I think of water when I think of Bear, which is where the sun sets - on the water (being on the west coast). I think of earth when I think of Raven, for Raven is dark and holds many mysteries about the Void from which we sprung, and the dirt from which we emerged (figuratively - not literally). Eagle - of course - I associate with air and wind, for Eagle flies very high, and this is also when I see the purple, orange and silky grey sunrises in my area, which remind me of air.

Wow... long answer given. Sorry. Tangent. I got lost.

By the way neat poll, Kystar. Interesting question.

I have a compass to plot out exactly the points, plus I live on the north coast, so even if I am compass-less, I know roughly where the points are supposed to be.

I guess technically my points should be north=water, south=earth, east=fire, west=air, but my personal feeling doesn't actually plot that way. My directions are hierarchical. I put earth in the north because earth is my element, so it represents me. I have air in the east for the Lord and water in the west for the Lady and then fire in the south because it is furthest from the earth and my weakest element.

Um...geeze, I guess I should answer my own question.

I live in Pittsburgh...but I really base things on the greater geography of this part of the USA.

I put Water in the East because the salt water is that way.
Air goes to the North because that's where the strongest winds blow from.
Fire is South...b/c of the Equator and tropics.
And Earth is West b/c that's where the majority of the landmass is for me.

I could theoretically switch thing around to base on tighter geography...like the lakes and the mountains and stuff...um...which would put Earth in the East, Water in the North, Air in the West and Fire stays in the South...but I've never zoomed my mental map in that close. I guess if I were going for local Elemental Gaurdian Spirits instead of just Elemental Guardians, I'd do it that way.

Drat! Now, I am rethinking my Cardinal points AGAIN! #-o

Kystar, do you think that geographical correctness is important in placing the elements? I suppose the only way to test this would be to try different placings according to geographical place, personal feeling and traditional placement and see which ones get the best results!

I believe that the different elements have Guardians, and these Guardians are the ones who actually add the elemental power to the working. But, in order to get the best results, you need the strongest power for each element. So, to get teh strongest (or most) guardians, you need to send your call out to the direction where the Guardians would gather.

Like calling for Fire Spirits to come down out of the North, where Ice caps live wouldn't get you many, be/c they're limited up there...but calling towards a volcano or the Equator would gather more be/c the environment would be better for them.

It's like looking for an herb, really. You wouldn't look for a tropical herb in a cold, mountain region. Why should I look for a Guardian in an environment that isn't compatible?

But that's how I look at it...I was curious to see if others were flexible or static in their approach to the Calling of the Elements.[/b]

I hit upon an epiphany a few years ago on this subject.

The directions all have their elements attached, but I have a odd way of looking at it.

North - The direction of Water. It is North because that is our winter season, when water in the form of snow (cold water), destroys the world we knew, and prepares it for re-creation.

South - The direction of Earth. Summer is the season of Earth's glory, when she is at her most alive and vibrant.

East- The direction of Air. Spring is the time when warm breezes begin to show themselves in our area. Chinooks become prevalent and they are generally brought in from the SE.

West- The direction of Fire. Our hottest months rush in fall. In August it's almost as though the heat wilts everything. I believe it's the worst time for Forest fires here, and the heat (although wonderful in my opinion) seems to become oppressive in the evenings, as though a dire warning of storms and loss to come for those who don't heed it's warning.

They don't follow the opposites rule, but that's how I call them now. ;) :-D

I couldn't answer the poll, as there was no option for those of us who don't use elementals. :smt081

Wow, I totally forgot this existed!

Do you not call the Elements at all when you do work?

I didn't mean to make the question that specific...I term it "Elementals" b/c I'm working with the Guardians of the Elements...but I've seen books and stuff where they just call the Element itself.

It's just how I view things, since I don't usually involve the God/Goddess aspect. I figure, the Divine's busy enough...and if the Guardians think it's worth going up the ladder to their supervisors, it'll go. Don't need me demanding to see the CEO of the company when Customer Service will do the job just fine!
