My mom in the Hospital

Post by Lotus » Mon Jan 19, 2009 9:03 am

My mother is going to be admitted into the Cleveland Clinic. She originally went to the hospital in Youngstown, Ohio with a blocked liver duct and was literally turning yellow. Apparently they found the cause of this was a benign tumor growing on her Pancreas. They were worried for a bit if it was cancer or not and found that it was not.
The tumor will be operated on in Cleveland to remove it. We will learn more information from there. This is very scary since my Grandmother (her mother) died of Pancreatic Cancer.
They said that this tumor had to have been growing for about a year. Ironically, she was diagnosed with diabetes around the same time. The Pancreas is your sugar factory in your body so we think there is no coincidence.

I will keep you guys updated. Say some prayers and light a candle for her.
She is actually getting the most flack from family for not calling us kids to go see her. She did not want that because it would cause her extra stress if she had to worry about us in travel. Keep in mind the wind Chill was -25*F. Maybe not a big deal to some of you colder climate folks but a big deal for Ohioans.

I am getting a strong feeling that she needs to avoid sweets and even artificial sweeteners.

WIll definitely keep her in my thoughts, and I think -25 is cold no matter where you are!

And blessings to you. It's never easy on us when our parents are sick.

Thanks for keeping well wishes in mind. I am sure this will make this easier for her.
She goes to have her surgery on the 27th of this month.

She is oddly (to me) not fearful whatsoever. Perhaps this is a factor of the blessings and well intentions from you guys? doiknow: :-?
It is a good thing because fear equals stress.

Thank you all again very much,

The surgery did not go well. They found three tumors total in contrast to the one they were expecting. None of them are cancerous (still) but they have to go in and get out the other tumors.
She is kind of flipping out now .

I will be going up to Cleveland next week to visit her and to give her some flowers.

Please continue to keep her in your prayers. [-o<

Edit:
I just got off the phone with my dad and he is saying that one of the tumors cannot be completly removed because it is wrapped around something. I am not getting whole tidbits of information so, I still do not know for sure.
I guess my mom e-mailed my brother saying that they told her that she only has 3-4 months to live. Hard to say because my mom has a tendancy to blow things out.
I do not know.
When she called me she was obviously strung out on pain killers and not making sense. She did give me the whole "you have to come down so I can give you my jewlery" talk.
I am kind of flipping out now.

(sorry about any mispelling)

Ok, after visiting her I now have more information.
She does have Pancreatic Cancer but the sky is not falling just yet. #-o
Not on the pancreas but on the tumor itself they found small capulated areas of cancer. They need to shrink the tumor and then they will go in and remove all of that area.
The important thing is that the cancer has not spread and this was found very early.
They have three separate methods back to back in order to shrink the tumor.

It is bad because it is cancer. There is good news because this is not a death sentence.

Thank you all for your continued prayers and postive energy. We are working on not making her feel so fatalistic because there is hope.

It's best that they found it early and it hasn't metastasized. Best wishes to her.
