Yule-tide Ornaments

Post by Hytegia » Wed Dec 16, 2009 7:19 am

Chemistry Assignment-
Make one or more Christmas ornaments with Crystalization (Super-saturated Solutions) of Pipe Cleaners. Counts as Test Grade.

Results:
A nice, white, Crystalized Pennacle.
A sturdy, palm-sized Goddess interpretation (the one with a tree looking like a woman).
A Druid Tree with Black and White, intertwining branches around the sides.
A Snake eating it's own tail.
A small, and well-crafted flat ornament that read "Happy Solstace" in Black on a White backdrop made out of tightly-woven Pipecleaners.
Funny looks from the teacher, and other students.
A 95 - I'm not sure WHY I ONLY got a 95. I think I got 5 points off the Calculations since I had a 12% error in the end.
Curious questions about why I celebrate Solstace.
Disappointed faces at the answers.
A good laugh.

Chemistry... Gotta love it! :]
I'll post the formula for making it if you want it. It's basically Dish Soap and Water.

Water, water, everywhere,

I'm with Kystar! I would love to see how to do this, so long as it's not something that will burn me or turn into a bomb :)

Okay-
You have to make a Supersaturated Solution. It's simple, really!

First, use pipe cleaners to make your Ornaments - White works best for the Winter months.

Second - the Solution.

You need to boil a bit of water. Make it big enough to soak the Ornament, but Small enough to SuperSaturate it. You need BORAX Detergent booster, and you just gradually add more and more untill it reaches it's Dissolving point (indicated by the fact that it will not be able to dissolve any more BORAX).
Now, you let it cool, then sit with the ornament dipped in it for about 12-24 hours. :]

Remove, and be sure to wash your hands. Don't get the ornament wet, since it will dissolve the Crystals.

Nor any drop to drink."

Ooh! Sounds pretty! I wonder if you could do this with those crystal growing kits, same principle right?
