After You Die

Post by Rowan » Tue Nov 03, 2009 6:14 am

I would like to know what everyone's thoughts are...

When a person dies, do they retain the same prejudices they had in life?
I have lost my way.

I don't know about "prejudices" carrying forward as they are more or less a learned trait.

I believe that when you enter the next cycle, you will be put into a position to learn whatever lessons you failed in the last life. A bigot would become a member of an oppressed minority, a greedy person put into an impoverished community, etc.
I'm living in the Shadows and the Night,
Wrapped in warm darkness, safe and sure.
My Path shines by the Moon's fragile light,
It frees my Mind and keeps my Heart pure.

I have to agree with Dark Waters...if the Divine see that you're clinging to prejudices to explain away bad behavior/decisions/attitudes, they'll probably shift you back through the mortal plane as a member of a group that you were prejudiced against.

Then again, if you don't believe in re-incarnation, than it's sort of a strange dilemma...what WOULD the gods/Divine do with someone who has a slew of prejudices when they have to find an eternal resting place for their spirit? :-k

Perhaps for a while, but I believe that most of the time you have a period of time on the other side to reflect on this life, in which, hopefully those prejudices would drop off. What do you think Rowan?

Thanks for all of the responses. I was speaking more along the lines of while you're still in the spirit world, not when you return to the earth in your next incarnation.

I am hoping that once you die, the realm of spirits is one of no prejudices, no hate, stuff like that. I always think of these things at Samhain because I try to visit my one grandmother who is interred locally and I feel that now that she's moved beyond this world into the spirit world that she knows things I never shared with her. I just don't want to be shunned because of what she now knows about me.

Please excuse me while I go wipe away the tears....

When one passes, there are two things that can happen, as I have experienced. 1) they are met by guides/loved ones and escorted. 2) They are too traumatized to see them, and so completely reject them (this is where I feel hauntings come from).

Those who pass on are escorted to the "Land of the Dead" which has appeared as many things to many people, but usually includes water of some sort (fountain, lake, well, etc). Here the spirit takes time for rest and renewall, healing, and a review of the previous life, as well as discussion on the best "start" in the next one, based not on retribution or lessons, but experience. "I was rich in my last life. I think I'd like to experience being poor, so that I can learn how to create richness, and experiece Who I Am through that this time." It has been shown to me that communication is easy through this realm. You can easily guide loved ones, see them, talk with them, but you're not worried when you're at this stage. You'r privy to the grand overview that we neglect when in our physical form. Eventually, reincarnation will occur once the parents and initial life circumstances have been chosen. It's a game, it's fun, and the goal is to remember, essentially, Who You Are, but at the same time, keep that secret from yourself, so that you can keep on playing. It's not meant to be hurtful, nor punishment, but a chance to remember who you are and play the game.

There will be a huge variety of answsers to this question wherever you go. Already you can see the differences between the four of us who have answered. The only thing we seem to have in common is reincarnation. :)

EDIT TO ADD:

Ha, we were replying at the same time. Yes, the otherworlds, as I have experienced them, are largely without prejudice. That Grand Overview I stated earlier is the reason for that. There will still be people that are "stuck" who are feeling the same pains as before, holding the same grudges, but once they pass through and chat with the gods/ guides/whatever they believe, they are largely freed from that.

In my experience, even people who have strongly disliked others hold an energy of love toward them once they have passed. My Catholic grandfather and grandmother would have been very upset to know that I am Pagan in this life, but on the other side hold me with love.

Of course, others may not agree. You hear such terms as "Your father would be rolling in his grave," and what a horrible saying. And it's absolutely false. Even when my grandfather was largely "crossed over" and out of his mind with Alzheimer's, when I visited with him in the otherworlds, he held me with love, even though on the physical plane he could not remember me.

Just remember that at Samhain, it is best to hold an open chair and invite people to join you, not try to force the matter.

Good luck to you hun.

I believe in Summerland, a life of renewal and regrowing for good people to rest...
However, if a person led an absolutely Evil life (As by the Rede) then they do not get this "rest." They go strait to the next life without a rest, and go based upon their prejudices and hates.

An example (if they were Evil):
ShockAweNow is going to be a Wiccan.
A KKK memeber is going to be Black.
etc.

And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink."

I never look at it as a punishment...but as a learning experience. After all, the point of re-incarnation is to learn the lessons the Divine needs us to learn in order to ascend in spirit to the highest that we can be.

I believe that yes, we have the time to rest, and that we are shown the Divine's love. But, if we don't release the mortal concepts, the Divine might send us back through to experience what it feels like from the other side of things.

I don't know what I believe. I know I call on my ancestors to watch over me, so I think we retain some of ourselves. But I also feel like there is an impersonal aspect to the afterlife where our energy melds with other engeries, kind of a balance.

Interesting aside though, when I was a fundamentalist Christian, I used to be so afraid that I was going to hell, no matter how good I was or how I prayed. And one day, I just stopped being afraid, I said to myself, even if there is nothing after this, my ashes (my family is the cremating kind) will eventually go the ground and feed new life, and I found comfort in that.

However, if reincarnation is and option, and I do get to come back in my next life, I am coming back as a cat, one spoiled Rotten by someone like me.
