10 Best Christmas Songs for Atheists

Post by Librarian » Sun Dec 12, 2010 4:01 pm

What are the board's favorites for this time of year? My favorite would be "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)".

What do you do if you're an atheist who likes Christmas carols?

It's widely assumed that atheists, by definition, hate Christmas. And it's an assumption I'm baffled by. I like Christmas. Lots of atheists I know like Christmas. Heck, even Richard Dawkins likes Christmas. Plenty of atheists recognize the need for rituals that strengthen social bonds and mark the passing of the seasons. Especially when the season in question is dark and wet and freezing cold. Add in a culturally- sanctioned excuse to spend a month of Saturdays eating, drinking, flirting, and showing off our most festive shoes, and we're totally there. And we find our own ways to adapt/ create/ subvert the holiday traditions to our own godless ends.

Sure, most of us would like for our governments to not be sponsoring religious displays at the holidays. Or any other time. What with the whole "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" thing. And some of us do rather resent the cultural hegemony of one particular religious tradition being crammed down everybody's throat, in a grotesque, mutant mating of homogenized consumerism and saccharine piety. But it's not like all atheists are Grinchy McScrooges. Many of us are very fond of Christmas. Some atheists even like Christmas carols. I'm one of them.

I like Christmas Carols too. After hosting a Christmas carol service as part of work, this year I like Hark the Herald Angels Sing, but I like the pop songs too...(anyone for some Mariah 8-) )

I used to love Christmas Carols... Now I find that I just fast forward through most of them. For non-Pagan ones, I love "Hey Santa", "A Spaceman Came Travelling", "Do you Hear what I Hear?", "Christmas in Japan", "Last Christmas" and "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays".

I really should see about posting links to all the Pagan Yule songs that I can find links to this year. Hey, if I did, would you guys be willing to add in the ones that you like that I miss? Sharing music this way can't be bad!

I've got a few favourites. I've certainly upgraded my Solstice library since last year, where "Enter the Night" by Lisa Thiel was pretty much on repeat with a few godess chants, LOL! I really don't like the Yule songs re-written from old Christmas tunes, though. I figure, if you're going to make Yule a legitimate Pagan holiday again don't turn around and copy Christian tunes. It's a bit hypocrytical. Although, in its defense, it gives Pagans something to sing when "Holy Night" comes around in the family carolling. I can't be the only Pagan refusing to sing about my "saviour" being born.

Very true...

It's my Birthday today, but I'll try to post up a thing of songs tomorrow.

Thank you, Lib!

I sorta thought that would go un-noticed, but apparently I couldn't get it past you guys. Yep, your resident Kitsune is another year older and the main topic of conversation yesterday was on whether that makes me wiser or not ( :-" ). I'll put up a full post a bit later today... I'm just checking my G-Reader right now.

(Oh and I used to love 'Oh Christmas Tree' when I was a kid. But any excuse for a singsong.)
Happy birthday Kitsune :)!
