Grandma

Post by Willow » Thu Jul 24, 2008 11:00 am

Just because we all have a grandparent like this.....

My Scottish Grandmother, who raised me was famous for her shortbread, but she would never give out the recipe, in fact she wrote it into her will rather than give it up, despite how much we begged.

When she died a few years ago the recipe got passed around the family, I dutifully copied every word and ingrediant to the letter.

Well, i just got the Joy of cooking, the most famous and best selling cookbook in the world as an early wedding present, what should I find smack dab in the middle on my first perusal through? My grandmothers shortbread recipe. Word for word.

Somewhere she is laughing very hard at every person in my family right now.

That's awesome...

And while I don't have a grandma like this (even when my Sainted Polish Grandma was still alive), this pretty much describes my mother to a 'T'. It took 20 years for her to teach me a cheese "fondue" recipe of hers... (Follow the velvetta directions and add Broccoli), you have no idea how much I sat there and smacked my head for awhile afterwards. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

Yep, there's one in every family!

 Oh that's just great!

I learned when my grandma died that she had been collecting recipe cards from this company since I was born - she got one per month, I think, and she wanted to gift it to me when I got older. It was only half finished. I think that was one of the most touching realizations of my life, that she'd been collecting this for so long.

However, my other grandma, still alive, kicking fiercely, and outliving us all would definitely pull something like the public recipe being her secret!
