You know I'm an animal lover, I love animals, I would like one day to have a farm so I can take in all the strays that people leave abandoned, But that's a long way off.
I watch this show on showtime, it's called Penn and Teller's Bulls***, Thats the actual name of the show.
They did a special on PETA once, and I was like your kidding me right? They say that animals are like slaves and should be freed where no person will ever own an animal again. Can you imagine that. Letting the cattle roam free, no fencing whatsoever. and the wild dogs coming to kill em off, and of course there would be no controled breeding, like there is now. We are just now starting to get the animal population slightly under control, if we let the animals roam free, well there goes that.
It's insane. I understand animals are friends, but if we didn't take them into our home and love them, well whats the point really? I understand there are certian animals that should never be pets, but the ones that are domesticated and have been for sevral thousands of years all the sudden letting them become wild?
Well I guess what I am trying to say is, I kinda understand PETA, but I think if a person doesn't want animals then don't get them, I don't like how the cow's and pigs and chickens are treated before butchering, thats why I buy my own cow once a year, I know the person who burtchers my cow and he is a nice decent person. I don't eat meat from the stores, most of the time, so thats not an issue.
And I'd also like to point out in the BS show, one of the like VP's is diabetic, and insulin for diabetics is I believe from the cow, and she uses it, it's hypocrsy at it's best.
Anyway End Rant I believe.

Yes. I have a friend who supports PETA in the naming and shaming of celebrities wearing fur, but she isn't a militant vegetarian by any means. I've eaten meat in front of her before and she hasn't been horrible and she'll happily feed her cat processed chicken by hand because he's old and it's his favourite food!Willow wrote:Ah PETA, they are an interesting group, I am for the ethical treatment of animals, but PETA seems to treat anyone that doesn't have four legs or feathers like crap.
Of course we should respect all forms of life...but humans are a form of life too. PETA are never going to get anywhere by degrading humans because what kind of a human is going to take that stick for long? You must be some kind of masochist to belong to a group like PETA and know that your colleagues value animals lives more than your own.
I don't believe in vivisection for any reason and if you must neuter your pets I believe you should have a word with them first, but just as I'd never place the life of one human above hundreds of animals, I wouldn't place the life of one animal above hundreds of humans. We're all in this together, we're all part of the whole cycle and we should stop thinking of ourselves as above or beneath animals!
Okay, rant over now

To eat or not to eat?.....
I don't know about nature religions, as I don't follow one. Nature is red in tooth and claw. Beasts eat other beasts and, generally, the higher up the food chain an animal is, the more likely it is to be a meat eater. Humans are at the top of a food chain and eat meat.Gaia Dragoncat wrote:Is it okay to eat meat? ...
... article that said that it was against nature religions to eat another animal.
There is just as much environmental damage done by vegetarians who don't eat locally and organically, i.e. their soya being imported, by plane, from other countries, their grains being grown where once there were forest. Oh, I'm not saying that cattle production isn't destructive, just that certain vegetarian replacement products can be just as damaging when you factor in air miles, rainforest devastation, etc.
Personally, I do my utmost to eat locally, seasonally and organically. I am lucky in that I live in an area surrounded by farms, so its not too difficult, but these days the supermarkets are getting with the programme, too, and sourcing goods from local suppliers, thus reducing their carbon footprints.

I tend to agree with you Sile.
As for meat, not everyone can be a vegitarian. There are several reasons why this is true and you hinted on most of them. Lately, I have been making sure that one meal a day is vegitarian since I do believe as a culture we consume too much meat.
I am however against some of the treatment our food gets. Goose liver from butter fed geese. They stick a funnel down their neck and pour butter into them until their livers are engorged with butter (while alive). A miserable death.
They have saki fed calves in Japan. This is where they get a calf and perpetually keep it drunk off of saki.
So many people are also on this organic kick. Think about it, if they have to ship an organic pineapple to Ohio is it organic anymore? Why pay extra when it will not make a difference.
I try to consume organic food within reason. For example, the tea I am drinking is fair trade and organic. Rishi Jade Cloud green tea and it is one of the best I have ever drank.

I don't eat meat every day, either.Lotus wrote:Lately, I have been making sure that one meal a day is vegitarian since I do believe as a culture we consume too much meat.
That's why I prefer to eat seasonally and locally, then organically. If I can't source organic locally, then I will get non-organic. I do my best to eat foods produced in my country of residence, but its not always possible. However, I do watch what is imported carefullyLotus wrote:So many people are also on this organic kick.
