The last time the British / Commonwealth/U.S forces carried swords in action was 1930 ish. But, as I said MOST of the "Western" navys still issue them to boarding partys. They are not like the ceremonial swords you see. But more or less exactly like the one in my picture. OR with the "Full" grip. which looks like a "pirate" sword.I am interested in when that switch would have been made because I know that swords in the Canadian navy are completely ceremonial now.
There was a Royal Navy officer in the late 80's who was awarded the Military Medal for defending his boarding party with his cutlass, whilst on anti pirate patrol in the far East, attached to the Australian Navy.
